Beth Eden Baptist Church, the oldest African-American Baptist church serving the West Oakland community for 126 years, invites applications for the position of Senior Pastor to succeed our retiring pastor. The candidate must be able to articulate a vision for the church that emphasizes spiritual growth and Christian Education Development. The search committee seeks a pastor with outstanding pulpit strength, and shares our vision for increasing membership and community service. This pastor is responsible to God and the church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, to teach the Holy Bible, to provide Christian leadership in all areas of the church, and engage in the pastoral care of the congregation. He or she should have good pastoral strength to relate to the needs of individual members. Strong administrative skills will help in leading a staff ministry and planning and coordinating worship.

QUALIFICATIONS


• Must be a licensed and ordained Baptist minister and duly ordained in accordance with the Baptist Church
• Must be able to plan and conduct worship services
• Meet qualifications as set forth in 1 Timothy 3:1-7
• Must have at least a Master’s degree from an accredited theological seminary
• Must have a clear understanding of Baptist Doctrine with the ability to teach
sound doctrine, and to preach effectively from the Bible
• Proficient in written and oral communication
• Minimum of 6 years as an assistant pastor or minister
• Must be an effective leader with managerial and administrative abilities, as well
as understand the financial aspects of the church
• Must be knowledgeable in the use of technology
• Must be committed to continuing religious training/education
• Must be committed to church growth and membership retention
• Must be able to articulate a vision for the church that emphasizes spiritual
growth and Christian education development
• Must be willing to attend, support, and encourage members to attend Local,
State, and National Congresses and Conventions for religious education and
ideas that will enhance the church’s ministries
• Must demonstrate a record of community and mission involvement

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A PASTOR


• The Pastor will be an ex-officio member of all church ministries/committees
• The Pastor will preside over: worship services, revivals, funerals, weddings,
baby dedications, etc. or designate someone else to perform activities in his/her
absence
• The Pastor will be responsible for teaching, counseling, and observing the
Ordinances of the Lord’s Supper and Baptism
• The Pastor will be responsible for visiting members who are hospitalized,
confined to home, or in an extended care facility as well as delegate these
responsibilities to the Diaconate
• The Pastor will moderate church conference meetings
• The Pastor will be responsible to work with Deacons, Trustees, and other
ministry leaders that serve at the Official Board
• The Pastor will oversee staff development to assure all persons have sufficient
resources to ensure their duties and responsibilities
• The Pastor will work with various ministries to provide training leadership in
planning, organizing, and coordinating programs in discipleship and ministry
• The Pastor must demonstrate a multi-generational approach to spiritual growth
and congregational formation
